Coinage of the Western Emperors
Upon the death of Theodosius I the throne
of the western portion of the empire was inherited by Honorius. At the time of
his father's death Honorius was only eleven years old and soon came under the
control of his chief general Stilicho. This was the start of a string of Western
Emperors who would be only figureheads for the true powers behind the throne.
The end for the western portion of the Empire came in the summer of 476 A.D.
when German troops mutinied and proclaimed their chieftain Odoacer as King of
Italy. The reigning Emperor Romulus Augustus was sent to Campania in retirement
and the Imperial regalia and insignia was sent to the Eastern Emperor Zeno along
with the message that the west no longer needed the services of an Emperor. At
this point only the eastern portion of the Empire remained.
