Roman Coinage of the
Severan Period
Listed below are coins from the Roman Imperial period, from
193 A.D. to the year 235 A.D. The Roman coins of this period start with those of
the reign of Septimius Severus in 193 A.D. and end with those of Severus
Alexander who was murdered, along with his mother Julia Mamaea, by the troops of
Maximinus in March of 235
A.D. During the Severan period under the reign of Caracalla Roman citizenship
was granted to all free inhabitants of the Empire, and the antoninianus was
introduced in 214 A.D., as a new coin denomination.
