Roman Bronze
Appliqués
Listed below are items which were applied
to Roman uniforms and belt-work, they may have been for ornamentation or for use
as insignia or as part of a soldiers armoring. Some of the items may have been
used for other purposes, most have been recovered from ancient battlefields.
These bronze pieces can make an interesting addition to a collection of Roman coins and
artifacts, creating a more rounded collection of the people and the time they
lived in.

| (App0001) Roman Appliqué, 1st-3rd Century A.D. |

| Obv. - An inscribed design on a teardrop shaped bronze
appliqué with four circular extensions, one at each corner. |
| Rev. - Two bronze extensions used to affix the appliqué to
leather. |
| Comments: Length - 7/8" (21 mm), Width at center of body -
5/8" (15 mm). |

| Obv. - An interesting appliqué with two circular areas, one
at each end, with a shield motif in the center, a vertical stack of short
lines along the edge of the central device. |
| Rev. - One of what would have been two bronze extensions
remains which would have been used to affix the appliqué to a leather piece. |
| Comments: Length - 7/8" (22 mm), Width at point of center
device - 1/2" (11 mm). |
| (App0003) Roman Appliqué, 1st-3rd Century A.D. |

| Obv. - This appliqué has an eight rayed sunburst pattern
with a small center circular device, three small raised circles of
increasing size between each of the rays. |
| Rev. - Two bronze extensions which would have been used to
affix the appliqué to leather. |
| Comments: Length - 1 3/16" (30 mm) across from end of point
to end of point. This appliqué was probably used for ornamentation, possibly
on a military uniform. |

| Obv. - This appliqué is shaped like a crescent moon. |
| Rev. - There are two bronze extensions which would have
been used to affix the appliqué to leather. |
| Comments: Length - 1 3/8" (35 mm), Width - 1 3/16" (29 mm).
There is a slight bend to each of the two ends. |

| Obv. - This appliqué is shaped like an inverted teardrop
with a central teardrop device which is surrounded by a two lines. There are
six circular extensions, one at each end and the remaining four arraigned
two to a side. |
| Rev. - There are two bronze extensions which were used to
attach the appliqué to leather. |
| Comments: Length - 1 1/8" (33 mm), Width - 5/8" (16 mm) at
center of teardrop. |
| (App0006) Roman Appliqué, 1st-3rd Century A.D. |

| Obv. - This appliqué is shaped like a three lobed leaf with
a three part teardrop design in the center. |
| Rev. - Two and a small portion of the third bronze
extensions which would have been used to affix the appliqué to leather. |
| Comments: Length - 7/8" (22 mm), Width - 6/8" (17 mm) at
the widest point. There is one small hole in the upper left teardrop. |
| (App0007) Roman Appliqué, 1st-3rd Century A.D. |

| Obv. - This appliqué is shaped like a heart with added
embellishments at the top and bottom. There is a central device consisting
of a circular center surrounded by two teardrops above it and chevron shaped
device below it. |
| Rev. - Three bronze extensions which would have been used
to affix the appliqué to leather. |
| Comments: Length - 13/16" (21 mm), Width - 15/16" (24 mm). |

| Obv. - This appliqué has a triangular shaped cutout in the
upper center, the overall shape of the appliqué is a rounded triangular
shape. There are several very light lines surrounding the cutout. |
| Rev. - There are two bronze extensions which still retain
the backing metal which were used two affix the appliqué to leather. |
| Comments: Length - 6/8" (19 mm) from top to bottom, Width -
1 3/16" (30 mm). |
