Roman
Republican Coinage
Circa pre 290
B.C. to 41
B.C.
Listed below you will find coins of the Roman Republican
period, coins of other periods of Roman history can be found on additional pages
listed to the left.
Roman Republican coinage began with the AES Rude before c. 290
B.C., this was a cast bronze currency which consisted of irregular lumps of
bronze, of widely varied weights, and which lacked any indication of value. In
approximately 290 B.C. the AES Signatum was introduced, this was a cast
bronze ingot with designs on both faces; they can often be found broken into
fragments representing fractions of the original full ingot value. In
approximately 280 B.C. struck coinage was introduced, this was followed by the
striking of the first anonymous denarius in approximately 211 B.C. The first
denarii (plural of denarius) which could be attributed to a specific
moneyer were struck in c. 206 B.C. Roman
Republican coinage overlaps the coinage of Roman Imperatorial coins which began
with Pompey the Great in 71 B.C.
