Roman Coinage of the Civil War of 193-197 A.D.

Listed below are coins from the Roman Imperial period, from 193 A.D. to the year 197 A.D. The Roman coins of this period start with those of the reign of Pertinax and end with those of Clodius Albinus. During these years several internal wars were fought as different claimants to the throne fought to either maintain or take control of the empire. It was also during this period of Roman history that upon the murder of Pertinax by a group of Praetorian guardsman, on March 28th, 193 A.D., that the Praetorian guard auctioned off the Empire to the highest bidder - a rich senator named Didius Julianus, who had offered each guardsman a bonus of 25,000 sestertii upon his accession. The turmoil finally ended when Septimius Severus defeated Albinus, who then committed suicide. Having defeated Albinus, Septimius Severus sent his severed head to Rome as a warning to the Roman senate against any further meddling.
