Ancient
Crosses
Listed on this page are crosses of ancient
origin, many of which originated in the Byzantine empire. We stock many
Byzantine crosses of different designs; the period in which our Byzantine
crosses were made is from the 9th century A.D. through the 12th century A.D.
Many of our Byzantine crosses are still wearable for that special occasion and
all of the crosses we offer make a very interesting display piece.

| Comments: Obverse displays full standing Madonna and Child, on either
side a saint appears at the terminal. The reverse reveals the crucified
Christ, his head fallen to his chest. Green patina. Very nice example of a
Byzantine cross. |

| Comments: Raised circles surrounded
by a circle of smaller raised circles at the end of each cross arm as well
as in the center of the cross. Beautiful green patina, very delicate, very
displayable. |

| Comments: Cross with three inverted
tear drop shaped suspensions. Central cross ornamented with a raised circle
at the end of each arm as well as a raised circle in the center that is
surrounded by a square of smaller raised circles. Each suspension has three
raised circles as well as a depression which may have at one time held a
stone of some type.
This cross is still in as excavated condition. It is very beautiful and
displayable, and would make an interesting addition to any collection. |
