Roman Coinage from
the Time of the 12 Caesars
Listed below are Roman coins from the period of the twelve Caesars which
lasted from Julius Caesar through the reign of Domitian. The Roman coins of the time of the 12 Caesars are an interesting
mixture of designs rooted in the coinage of the Roman Republican period and
those which show the evolution of the coinage into the Roman coinage of the
Imperial period. During the reign of Octavian the Roman
Imperial period was ushered in when the Roman senate granted Octavian the title
"Augustus", which became the name by which he is best remembered. Imperial
status was transferred by the assumption of the title "Augustus" by his
successors, so the original granting of the title by the Roman senate is
considered to be the beginning of the Roman Imperial period.
