The Tetrarchy #2

Coinage of the Tetrarchy

Listed below are coins of the Roman Imperial period, which lasted from 284 A.D. until A.D. 324 which overlaps the coinage of the Constantinian period. Emperor Diocletian selected his friend Maximianus as co-emperor in 286 A.D. Later in 293 A.D. Diocletian appointed his Praetorian Prefect, Galerius, as a Caesar to help him govern. He also instructed Maximianus to appoint his Praetorian Prefect, Constantius Chlorus, as Caesar to assist him. It was the joint rule of these two Augusti and two Caesars that the term Tetrarchy refers to.
