Roman Coinage from
the Decline of the Empire
Listed below are coins of the Roman Imperial period, which
lasted from 364 B.C. until A.D. 394. During this period of the history of the
Roman empire the family of Valentinian dominated the throne. Valentinian I would
rule from 364 A.D. until 375 A.D., one his first actions was to elevate his
brother Valens to the rank of Augustus to rule the East. Valens would spend
eight months fighting the usurper Procopius before he was finally able to defeat
and execute him.

Gaul, Gratian's troops deserted him. As Gratian fled in the direction of the
Alps he was captured and murdered at Lugdunum. |

| Comments: Magnus Maximus was a usurper in the
western portion of the Empire including Britain, Gaul, Spain, and Africa.
When he tried to add Italy to his Empire he was defeated by Theodosius I at
the battle of Poetovio and was later executed near Aquileia on July 28th,
388 A.D. |
