Coinage of the
Adoptive Emperors
Listed below are coins of the Roman Imperial period, which
lasted from 96 A.D. until A.D. 192, this period is known as the time of the
adoptive emperors. During this time the reigning Emperor would select his heir
from outside his family based on the persons abilities. Emperors whose coinage
was issued during this period include: Trajan, Hadrian (famed for the wall that
bears his name in England), Marcus Aurelius, and the son of Marcus Aurelius,
Commodus. For those that might remember the film "Gladiator" the names Marcus
Aurelius and Commodus will be familiar.
